Spring Lake Park

Omaha, NE

Spring Lake Park once again has a lake, thanks to City of Omaha a green infrastructure project. The park’s lake dried up decades ago, and through a series of BMP features including a detention pond, the lake was restored.

The green infrastructure enhanced the park’s habitat diversity and expanded recreational opportunities by restoring a historic pond as an urban fishery, and improved public access to an under-used and natural area within the park. Water quality features also serve as hazards on the Spring Lake Golf Course, enhancing golfers’ play experience.

The project is the green infrastructure component of a sewer separation project. Incorporating the green infrastructure features reduced the overall cost of the sewer separation project by $6,000,000.

The project is the recipient of the National Association of Flood and Stormwater Management Agencies (NAFSMA) 2018 Second Place Award in the Medium/Large Population category. It received the ASLA Great Plains Chapter 2017 Built Project Award and ASLA Central States Region 2013 Planning and Analysis Award. The project also received a 2017 Engineering Excellence Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Nebraska (ACEC/Nebraska).
